Nocturnal Ecology

Nocturnal Ecology

There has been an increasing recognition of nocturnal activities as an integral part of the life history of many bird species. However, studying nocturnal species could be challenging because they are cryptic, secretive and active at a time when accessibility to the field may be challenging. This has resulted in most animal studies being restricted to diurnal species with nocturnal species in the survey due to dusk, predawn or incidental observations. Thus, the Nocturnal Ecology lab intends to bridge the knowledge gap in nocturnal species, particularly with distribution, seasonality, migration, climate, vegetation structure and human-wildlife relationships. Presently, it runs a Passive Acoustic Monitoring scheme in several legacy Key Biodiversity Areas in the different ecological zones in Nigeria. This is to provide an understanding of the spatio-temporal distribution pattern of animals and provide insights into the behaviour of these bird species. This will enhance proper management decisions, policies and conservation objectives on wildlife.
