The A. P. Leventis Ornithological Research Institute (APLORI) was founded on June 18th 2001 following a generous contribution by Mr A. P. Leventis. The institute is located within the Amurum Forest reserve at Laminga, Jos-east Local government Area on the outskirts of Jos – the Plateau state capital in north central Nigeria. APLORI is a well equipped field station with excellent facilities for teaching and scientific fieldwork. The APLORI research station comprises a main administrative building, office buildings, guest houses, a plant nursery, security building and a student hostel.

It also contains a reception area, the lecture theatre, seminar rooms, laboratory and the library. The second building is located c. 50 metres from the main building and has office space for the PhD and research staff and associates. This building also houses the herbarium, the equipment cabinet and store.

The guest houses are well furnished accommodation for visiting researchers and guests. These include one self-contained apartment and another bigger shared 4-bedroom apartment with a sitting room and an outside porch allowing a nice birding view especially in the mornings and evenings.

All the buildings have a round the clock power supply, water and internet and their location within the forest reserve makes it excellent for a diverse range of research, fieldwork and teaching activities. It is a useful facility for both local and visiting students and researchers. The general environment is serene and beautiful with the typical nice and friendly weather of the Jos Plateau. There are good access roads from the state capital and the Airport, making it suitable not only for research and training but also for keen birders and nature lovers.
